Welcome to Iowa
North Star FIsh Hatchery
In 1939 a group of Iowa State University engineering
students came to observe Arlo Hinegardner leading two
teams of horses and a plow, they did not find him preparing
for planting season. Rather he was in the midst of building
a lake. Voting on whether he could do it, they decided
it would not be finished. The result. A 70 acre lake
finished in 1940 and opened for fishing in a few years.
A fisherman would pay by the pound. Some might consider
Arlo Hinegardner a pioneer of the Iowa agriculture industry.
Making the way for the fish hatcheries in the area.
You might say that he was before his time, says his
grandson Todd Hinegardner. |

Lucky
anglers purchased their catch from Arlo for $0.30 per
pound. Business became so good he built other ponds to
raise more fish to stock his lake, neighbors, and pond
owners across Iowa started buying fingerlings from Arlo's
fish hatcheries to stock their ponds. And that is when
he spawned one of the states first fish hatcheries
in Iowa, North Star Fish Hatchery. Todd Hinegardner,
34, is the third generation to run North Star Fish
Hatchery. His father, Larry, 67, was 6 yrs. Old when
Arlo started the business. Larry is passing the torch
to Todd. Located 6 miles west of Tama and Toledo, Iowa.
